Discrimination against National Serving Singaporeans

The poster, 26, have a late enlistment due SAF had missed out his enlistment, looking for jobs yet faced discrimination when he had his job interview.
Last Friday I went for an interview at this Fabrication plant U..i at Pasir Ris. The fab claims itself as the 2nd largest in the world.

It was a 1 to 1 interview with a fat Taiwanese manager. The Very First thing the manager asked me after my introduction is

Taiwanese Pig Manager: "I see you are a Singaporean. Do you need to go back to serve NS every year?"

I replied Yes, I do need to go back

Taiwanese Pig Manager: "Oh, so you have been going back even during your uni studies?"

Me: "Yes, at least once per year.

Then came the f-up remarks
Taiwanese Pig Manager: "How long do you need to go back every year? You Know, I once have this Singaporean Subordinate. He every year need to go back for like 2 weeks of in camp training, then still need to apply leave every now and then for some kind of briefing talks by NS."

"Worse, he needs to pass some kind of physical test every Year, so when he trains for his test by running in the night, he will have no energy to do work in the morning, Affect Job Performance. Then if he fails, need to attend RT, waste of company time."

"If every Singaporean needs to do all this, then I rather don't hire you all then. 1 year you all will have like a few months no need to work due to NS, And you also are quite old compare to other graduates"

Read this from hardwarezone.com and got some feelings towards it. I remember few months ago Uncle ZZZ faced similar discrimination from the job interview. In the end, he didn’t get the job; maybe given to female or foreign talent.

Sometimes, it troubled me. I wonder if the government had done enough to help male Singaporean to overcome those discrimination and disadvantage. Yes, maybe the reservist year is shorter; laws had implemented to protect the male Singaporeans. But within the community and public itself, there are still many discrimination towards male Singaporean when comes to working. Companies would also prefer not to hire the reservists. I also understand that small companies would not able to bear the cost of their staff going back for reservist. But does that mean that all males have to work at big companies?

It’s another reason why female and foreign talent should serve National Service too. :)

Boring Pig Year

It has been a boring piggy year for me…

I stayed at home to complete some assignment. Teachers had been crazy giving assignment because of the long break. Well, students are not supposed to have break I guess. The job of the student is to study, study, STUDY!

I had completed English assignment and some Math assignment today. Wasted a lot of time sleeping. I fall asleep while doing locus for Math. Locus is boring. I mean, locus can be fun, but doing so much can be quite scary. Image you almost complete the question and at the last part you found that you do not have enough space, or maybe your answer is 0.02 different from the answer given, it can be quite frustrating.

A lot of assignments have to be done. Oh... why don’t my teachers think like this? ...

What are the 5 things you would do if you are the Government of Singapore?

This morning, aunties at the wet market had been cursing and swearing at the government over the Budget 2007. Basically, they were unhappy about the GST, but were happy about government giving them money again.

Think again, is the government doing enough to help its people? Not just about the Budget 2007, but other issues that people are concern as well. What would YOU do if you are the government? Thus, I came out with this “mimi” which allows you to be the government of Singapore.

What are the 5 things you would do if you are the Government of Singapore?

1. I would want female to serve National Service too. Males had wasted a lot of chances compared to females because of National Service. Some have to give up their scholarship; some have to get stuck in Singapore, separated with their family. Female get to work earlier than the males. Unfair isn’t it? Please don’t tell me life is unfair or female are too girly to be in the National Service. Females can be the National Service cook for the guy (the food still sucks), help with office work. Isn’t it great? I didn’t say ask them to march for 24km! After all, everyone have a part to play in defending Singapore.

2. I would also want to change education system and policy. Current system and policy, I can’t say it is not good, but there are rooms for improvement. I would also want students to study in Hi-Tech environment, using computers/ laptops to study. But of course it might lead to other problems, which I don’t really care much.

3. I would want to improve the working condition here. Nowadays people are lowly paid compared with our foreign talent. Local people overworked yet underpaid. I will implement some laws so that more jobs would be created and unload people’s work so that they have more time to spend with their family.

4. I would also implement a law that all married couples are to have sex every week no matter what. Okay, not exactly to have sex but to have at least a child after 5 years of marriage. This is to solve the population in Singapore. If not, we really have to ask foreign talent to have sex here in Singapore.

5. Last but not least, I would give Singaporean the freedom of speech. I don’t care their comments is directly shooting at my party (If I have one), but I believe comments will help my government to work harder and give the best to its people.

So, what are the 5 things you would do if you are the Government of Singapore?

National Service - I am crazy over it

posted by cockroach//蟑螂 at Friday, February 02, 2007 11:50 PM

I went to the library today, took a book from the shelf and start reading the book – The Army Daze. My teacher had been staring at me, most likely wondering why am I so interested in National Service.

I don’t know. I am somehow very excited to get enlisted to National Service. Ever since I got my first letter telling me I now no longer can run away from NS, I had been reading a lot of stuff related to NS. I had been talking to classmate about National Service, telling them some interesting stories I read online and heard from my friends. But none of them very interested. Most likely they might think cockroach is a crazy guy who love NS so much where else others hate it so much.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a guy who has been failing NAFA test in my secondary school life. If I enlist into NS, I might have problem doing even 1 pushup. I might have problem overcome the SOC, or maybe I can’t even pass my IPPT forever in my NS life. I might need to start training now to get myself a little fit. But at the end of the day, no words can describe the feeling I am having now regarding about National Service. I am just super duper excited.

Crazy as you might say. But I really looking forward to be get enlisted. Maybe just few more months, I might apply for early enlistment. Or maybe two to three years later when I finish my JC or Poly courses I will enter a new chapter of my life.

Last year, my mum had a conversation with my old neighbour who holding Singapore PR. They went to cancel their son’s PR because of the NS thing. My mum said this,

“National Service good what. Let them know how to become man.”

I don’t know how mum feels when she know I received my first National Service Letter. It makes me wonder, will my mum would let me go for my National Service with a peace of mind and not like others who cry or nag at their son when sending their son off. Maybe she dying to send me off but for sure – I will miss my mum and my home.

National Service, I wonder why I am crazy over you…

Mum, you can't eat money

Phone rang and mum picked up the phone.

Dad: Want to have supper for tonight?
Mum: I want $12 but nothing else.
Dad: Huh?
Mum: Since you so rich, can buy supper. Might as well give me the money. Each packet of noodle cost $3. You going to buy 4 packets for the family, that would cost $12. Give me that $12.
Me: Mum, you can’t eat money.

That happens when ‘someone’ had went shopping almost everyday.
